Jorge Labarga’s Early Life and Education
Jorge Labarga was born in Cuba in 1952. At the age of 11, he and his family emigrated to the United States – settling in West Palm Beach, Florida. Growing up, Jorge faced many challenges as a Cuban immigrant navigating a new country and culture.
Despite these hurdles, Jorge remained determined to succeed academically. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida before attending law school at Stetson University College of Law where he received his Juris Doctor degree.
Jorge’s passion for justice was evident even during his early years as an attorney. He worked with legal aid organizations providing free legal services to indigent clients who could not afford representation.
Through hard work and dedication, Jorge rose through the ranks becoming one of the most respected attorneys in Florida – ultimately being appointed Chief Justice by Governor Rick Scott in 2014. Jorge Labarga’s Professional Career
Jorge Labarga’s professional career is quite impressive. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Law in 1979, he started his legal career as a public defender before working for the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office.
In 1996, Labarga became a judge and was appointed to the Fourth District Court of Appeal by Governor Jeb Bush in 2008. He served on that court until January 2011 when he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Florida by Governor Charlie Crist.
Labarga also served as Chief Justice from July 2014 to June 2016 – making him the first Hispanic person to hold this position in Florida. During his tenure as Chief Justice, he focused on improving diversity within the judicial system and increasing access to justice for all Floridians.
