Remedios Romero-Solares was found dead in her employer’s backyard on November 11. The owners of the home were out of town but had allowed the woman in to clean while they were gone. She was found by a cousin who went to the home to pick her up and found her bloodied corpse in the back yard. There were eight American Bulldogs in the backyard, as well as 24 marijuana plants. It was clear to authorities that at least one of the dogs had mauled the woman prior to her death. The dogs have been impounded while animal control officers investigate the situation. The police will also be investigating the drug growing and determining whether or not charges should be filed against the owners of the home. my sincere condolences go out to the family of this unfortunate victim.
Dog Bites Are Prevalent But Not Often Fatal
According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are at least 800,000 dog bites treated by doctors or medical personnel per year, and at least 350,000 of these require emergency treatment. About 35,000 of these bites require further serious medical intervention such as surgery. The number of deaths from dog attacks totals about 30 per year on average; about half of these are due to pitt bulls or Rottweilers, while the other half are due to other breeds.
What Caused This Accident?
Without witnesses, it is very difficult to determine exactly what led up to this fatal dog attack. It is clear that the woman had permission to be in the home, but why she was in the back yard and why the dogs were out remains unclear. The presence of marijuana plants also lends a possible clue that the dogs may have been aggressive because they were trained to protect the plants. The police will use forensic evidence from the scene to try to reconstruct what happened and determine how the fatal attack occurred.
Liability Issues in Dog Attacks
Owners are always responsible for their dogs’ behavior unless the victim is an uninvited guest on the property who obtained illegal access. That is clearly not the case here, so the owners will be liable for the wrongful death of the woman due to their dogs’ actions. A personal injury attorney can help the family file a claim for these damages. There were eight American Bulldogs in the backyard, as well as 24 marijuana plants.
