A woman –who at the time of going to press was still being sought by the Entre Ríos Police–, prosecuted for the murder of an accountant in an incident that occurred in 2008 in the city of Gualeguay, and was lodged in the Penal Unit No. 6 of Paraná, suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. Bonazzola, who was prosecuted for the murder of the accountant Patricia Marina Tonón –an incident that occurred on January 21, 2008, in the city of Gualeguay–, escaped yesterday morning from the “Concepción Arenal” Women’s Penal Unit in Paraná. The 45-year-old fugitive surprised everyone by leaving a bundle in her bed to pretend she was sleeping and cover her escape while the guards were conducting a night patrol in that sector of the Paraná prison.
The surprise was great when they noticed that the woman accused of the terrible crime was not in her bed. The woman had hidden in some area of the prison, then broke the perimeter fence and escaped, bypassing the security system. Another suspicion is that, if confirmed, it would be very serious if the inmate escaped under the distracted gaze of those who must ensure that the prisoners remain within the prison unit until Justice decides otherwise or finally condemns them. The complaint about the whereabouts of the inmate was filed at the 10th police station in Paraná, because it is the police unit that corresponds to the jurisdiction in which UP 6 is located and because –apart from the fact that she escaped from an institution in charge of penitentiary officers–, the responsibility for her search or transfer falls on the police institution.
This burden only falls on the Penitentiary Service after an inmate is convicted, with a final sentence. What is striking is that Bonazzola had no history of escape attempts, according to the prison warden, Claudia Martínez. In prison Also, another important fact is that in the framework of the homicide trial that was being carried out against Bonazzola for whom the Prosecutor’s Office and the plaintiff had requested a life sentence, the Criminal Court of Gualeguay had set the hearing for the 27th of this month in which the sentence would be announced.
THE ACCUSATION
Bonazzola was arrested in January 2008 and accused of murdering the well-known accountant from Gualeguay, Patricia Marina Tonón, who was 45 years old when she died from 12 stab wounds inflicted with a box cutter inside her professional studio on Urquiza Street, three blocks from the Police Department Headquarters. The woman accused of murder during a robbery lived in the 62 Viviendas neighborhood, where she was arrested in the early hours of January 22, after her house was raided and a purse, documents, sneakers, clothes, and even a bicycle belonging to the woman who was killed with 12 deep cuts on Monday, January 21 two years ago were found.
Sources from the Penitentiary Service have unofficially confirmed that investigations have been initiated against the personnel responsible for the guard duty yesterday morning to determine responsibilities in explaining the reasons, causes, and circumstances by which a person with no experience in prison escapes was able to obtain his freedom so successfully.
